If you’re a first time renter, self-storage may seem like a daunting task, and you may want some storage advice for Boston. After nearly 45 years in the self-storage business, Cubic Cycle Storage has a few self storage tips for Boston residents that will make your move more organized and efficient.

Storage Unit Advice: Prepare Your Area

Before showing up at the storage facility, there are some preliminary steps you can take to make the process easier. While your belongings are in the storage unit, you want them to stay in good condition.

As you move your belongings into the unit, you want to make sure your boxes are stacked in a manner so they won’t break, all your items fit in your unit without overstuffing and that your unit is secure with a lock. Our storage unit advice for people relocating or moving in Boston can help you avoid damage, save time and protect your belongings.

  • Insure your property. The property you place inside your storage space is your responsibility. Before you move into your storage unit, contact your insurance agent or ask the location manager to provide you with information about companies that can provide insurance coverage for your property.

  • Inspect your storage space. It is important to inspect the storage unit before you sign a lease. Some of the most valuable storage advice you can take is to make sure the unit size is adequate to fit all of your belongings. Look at the latch, door, light, and space to make sure there are no mechanical issues. Most storage facilities have multiple units and buildings, so inspecting your unit also helps remind you of the location and building your belongings are in.

  • Purchase a high quality hardened steel or brass lock to secure your storage unit. Need a lock? Stop in and see what we have in the office.

  • Place pallets or skids on the concrete floor to eliminate direct contact with the concrete.

  • Determine the packing materials you need. We don’t just offer great storage unit tips, EZ Storage also carries bubble-wrap, tape, drop cloths, mattress and furniture covers, locks, a variety of boxes, and more!

  • Fill all your boxes to capacity. Partially full or bulking cartons may collapse or tip during your move. Heavy items like books or tools should be packed in small boxes so they are easy to lift.

  • Protect your fragile goods with packing (i.e. bubble wrap), and place them near the top of your storage space.

  • Label all of your boxes. Take home a list of labeled boxes for easy reference when you need to locate your goods.

  • We know your belongings are important to you so make sure you are storing your goods in a secure storage facility. See our security page for more information.

    When Packing Your Unit

In order to have the safest, simplest and quickest experience loading your belongings into your storage unit, our storage unit advice takes space, convenience and potential risks into account. Cubic Cycle Storage makes every effort to provide convenient and custom storage solutions. If you need help loading your unit, we have handy moving carts free for your use while at our facility.

    • Pack the storage space carefully. Help protect your belongings by leaving air space around the perimeter for ventilation.

    • For your protection, do not lean items against storage walls. Masonry walls tend to sweat in humid conditions. Leaning items such as wood or boxes against the storage unit wall could result in moisture transferring from the wall to your belongings. It is always best to leave airspace around the perimeter and between storage walls and the belongings you are storing.

    • Leave a walkway to the rear of your space for easy access.

    • Place frequently used goods near the door. Use all the space available, including the height. Cubic Cycle units have extra high ceiling clearance with a minimum height of 9 feet.

    • Do not hang items from fire sprinkler pipes. This storage tip could save you from potential fines and expensive damage. Hanging belongings from sprinkler pipes could inadvertently result in damaging the pipe or setting off the sprinkler system, which could be costly to you and others.

    • It is important to remember that you cannot place prohibited items in your storage unit. State laws, local laws and fire codes determine what items may be stored. Never store live animals, perishables, food, etc. Electrical appliances (heaters, refrigerators, lights, etc.) may not be connected to any service outlets.
